Lung Lobectomy Surgery (Wedge resection of mass) - Lung Cancer
Houston Cardiac Surgery Associates offer a variety of surgical options for patients with diseases afflicting their lungs, pleura (lining of the lung), esophagus and mediastinum (central chest cavity). One of the most common problems they encounter is Lung Cancer. The incidence of lung cancer in the United States is on the rise. Approximately 170,000 new cases of lung cancer are diagnosed each year in our country. Successful treatment of this disease requires a multi-disciplinary approach with close cooperation between primary care physicians, pulmonologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists and cardiothoracic surgeons.
While both chemotherapy and radiation therapy may aid surgery for possibility of success in advanced cases, early detection and surgery offer the best chance for cure, especially if the disease is localized to the lung.
Surgery for Lung Cancer
The most common surgical procedure for Lung cancer is called a Lobectomy. This procedure is usually performed via a 6 to 9 inch long incision along the side of the chest (open Thoracotomy) and the purpose is to remove the portion of the anatomic lung region in which the tumor is located. Along with this the surgeon also removes the appropriate lymph nodes from areas inside the chest cavity. Surgery is also used in diagnosis and staging of Lung Cancer.
Robotic-assisted Lung Surgeries
Robotic technology is used to assist surgeons to perform major delicate procedures thru much smaller incisions:
- Lung biopsies
- Lymph node biopsies of mediastinum
- Lobectomy
- Pneumonectomy
- Management of Pleural Diseases
- Treatment of Esophageal Diseases, including Cancer
- Robotic assisted esophagectomy
- Robotic assisted lung resection
- Robotic assisted mediastinal mass resection
The benefits of robotic-assisted surgery include:
- Better and precise 3-D visualization for the Surgeon
- Smaller Incision for patients
- Less Pain for patients
- Shorter recovery time
- Shorter Hospital stay
